Strengths: Lowellville has a small school district with a student teacher ratio of 8.5:1, which is almost half of the national average. This means that the teachers are able to focus more on each individual child and their learning needs. The school district has a drop out rate of 10%, which is almost half of the average drop out rate in Ohio. Lowellville also has a higher average ACT score and higher proficiency on the math and reading standardized tests when compared to Ohio averages. Sex education is definitely important in the school district, starting in grade 5 and continuing throughout high school. Although a small school district, Lowellville still offers bus services to the students to transport them to and from school. Lowellville offers free and reduced lunch to those who qualify, which is a great portion of the students. Lowellville school lunches do include a fresh fruit and vegetables most days of the week, which is important. Milk is provided every day as well. In addition, Lowellville’s school nurse, Betsy Wilson, is available for the students and many health services are offered for the students.
Weaknesses: Lowellville does not have a public library in their town so students must travel to Struthers, Poland, or Campbell if they want to use a library. Lowellville does not have any daycare centers either. Therefore, parents have to send their children to either Struthers or Campbell if they need that service. Lowellville only has one school nurse, Betsy Wilson, for both the elementary school and high school. However, she is only part time and is available for limited hours during the school days. Lowellville schools do not have very many after school programs for the students. There is a tutoring service provided by the YSU students, but other than that there is not a lot of options for other programs. Lowellville schools state that they provide healthy lunches but the menu includes sloppy joe sandwiches, lasagna, cheeseburgers, grilled cheese, meatball sandwiches, nacho supremes, hotdogs, corndogs, pizza, and BBQ pork rib sandwiches.
