Recreation:
Strengths: Despite being such a small community, Lowellville actually has an impressive amount of outdoor recreation to offer its residents. Residents have the opportunity to golf, kayak/canoe, play basketball, and use the bicycle trail for activities such as biking, skating, walking, and jogging. The summer recreation program is also an excellent resource for the children of the community. Finally, the Mount Carmel Society is a great asset to the community as Lowellville is highly populated with Italian families.
Weaknesses: There are many ways in which Lowellville could improve the recreation available to the residents. The biggest issue appears to be a lack of recreational activities for the children of the community. There are no parks and the only playground available is located on school property. Another issue is that there are very few clubs to get involved with. In addition to a lack of clubs, the clubs that are available do not have a lot of information available online. This prevents possible future members from even realizing their existence. There is a massive lack of indoor space for recreation. I think a community gym would be an excellent addition for children, adults, and elderly alike. The city also lacks a community library and there is no movie theater in town. Finally, the bicycle trail would probably see more action if it were to be updated.

All children who attend Lowellville Schools and have graduated kindergarten are welcome to attend. While at summer recreation, children have the opportunity to participate in different activities such as basketball, mini golf, ping pong, shuffleboard, air hockey, dodge ball, foosball, crafts, board games, and even a carnival day. The concession stand is open for one hour for kids to purchase food and beverages. They are also welcome to pack a lunch. Thursdays are hotdog days in which the kids can bring their own hotdogs and buns and participate in a cook out. For the last day of the program, the volunteer fire department comes down to spray the kids with the fire hose to cool down. A waiver/medical form must be completed for every child in order to attend. Summer recreation typically runs from mid-June to mid-July. It is an excellent opportunity to get the kids outside and out from in front of the television/computer screens!

- Stavich Bicycle Trail:
- This is a 10-mile long bicycle trail that begins in Struthers, passes through Lowellville, and ends in New Castle, PA. The trail ascends and descends for its entire length. While the trail could use an upgrade, it still provides an excellent means to keeping the community active. There are no restrooms along the trail, but parking can be found at either end.
- Kayak/Canoe Trail:
- The Mahoning River cuts right through downtown Lowellville. This provides residents with the opportunity to participate in paddling sports such as canoeing and kayaking. A group called Trumbull Canoe Trails plans outings for group canoeing trips, many of which pass through Lowellville. It is only $10 to become a member. The group travels to other nearby rivers as well.
- Basketball Court:
- A Lowellville High School Alumni, Dom DeFrank, won a $25,000 grand prize after entering a Powerade contest. This grant went toward renovating the old basketball courts he played on as a kid. The renovation was completed in 2015 and the court is available to all students and Lowellville residents. The court is located near the school’s football field.
